Reply:the problem with online translations for English-German is that word by word (done by internet translators) does NOT equal meaning by meaning. You might want to stick to the old fashion way and do it yourself. You teacher will be able to tell the difference immediately.

This is NOT an "auto translator" where you plug in a paragraph and it spits out another paragraph. But if you enter a word, it does give you a list of different uses of it, and examples of the word used in a bunch of examples. And you can click on the speaker symbol and hear it pronounced, or click on the i for more information -- like to go to a site that has the verb conjugations.

Those auto-translator sites really do not work so well --at least if it is for more than individual words. Especially if you try a whole paragraph, anyone who knows German will know right away it came from an auto translator. (Just a warning , in CASE you're thinking of using it that way for translating something to turn in for school.)

EDIT: I just tested it out by putting my last paragraph in this answer into Babelfish and translating to German. It came out totally ridiculous!! It called it an "Automobile-Translator". And that is just for starters. Any teacher would have laughed.....and then failed me.

Reply:My limited German is quite rusty, but I'd say,

"Ike` Blat" although the "ch" is more like "Kuh" with emphasis, almost like a tiny cough. Remember, German does not have a long vowel sound, so 'a' is short as in 'father'.

Its a famous song but i dont know its title, they play it at football(soccer) and hockey games alot, and everyone sings(its one of those songs). The only part i remember in it is when they sing something like "Viva le Gloria" but it might be something other then viva. any help would be great! thanks

I know of someone who just moved to Germany and said the German government told him that his last name was inappropriate and if he wanted to live there, he had to change it. He said he was given a list of last names deemed appropriate by the government and had to choose one. Has anyone ever heard of this before? I am finding it hard to believe. Thank you.

There are a lot of immigrants in Germany from all over the world, mostly a lot of people from Turkey whose names are very hard to pronounce, and none of them has ever been told to change their name. As far as I know, this would be illegal to do anyway. The German government has no right to interfere with personal rights, and a person's name is part of it. Could it be that this person you heard this from was trying to fool you? This is more than absurd.

You can name your son Adolf Hitler if you want in some parts of the country but you can not hyphen a last name. Germany has very strict naming policies and they very from place to place. When you name your child you must send in the name to the authorities to get it ok'd by the bureaucracy. If the name is turned down you can appeal.

Major, Trooper, Bullet, Sarge, are some I've seen.

Non-military? Fritz, Caesar, or any of a line of personal names.

Raise him well--they can be very playful and good with kids, despite their size.

I am pretty sure the name is referring to a geographical origin of the family. There are two towns called "Leuben" in Saxony, one in the district of Mei脽en, another one is now a suburb of Dresden. "Leubner" just means "someone from Leuben". The placename in its turn is of Slavic origin, originally "Luben", from Sorbian "luby"

That aside, I would suggest you find a name that most Americans will identify with as you are in America, not Germany. I understand that you are proud of your heritage, but keep in mind where you are.

I am having the EXACT same problem. My problem is the Japanese wouldn't let me put my childs fathers name on the birth certificate since we weren't married and both foreigners. We are married now.

NOw it's caused a huge problem and we have had to hire a lawyer. We have to apply for a paper called American citizenship Certificate which costs $460. This will be his American birth certificate. We also have to apply for a American passport.

I don't know if I'm explaining this to you in a way you understand, but I can honestly say I don't even think my lawyer knows what she is doing...getting a DNA test is probably the smart thing to do and apply for sa AMerican passport along with a affidavate of support saying youa re the father. AT the passport website there's a form called Affidavate of support for PAternity.

Let me know if you find out a easier way to do it....
Reply:The mother should have given your name as the father and had it listed on the birth certificate when your daughter was born. You might be able to petition the hall of records for the city/town/jurisdiction where the baby was born to amend the birth certificate, or your attorney could handle it. You might need to prove paternity through DNA testing.

This is another reason to avoid having a child before marriage!

I absolutely love the name Samson for a dog. My grandma had a dog named Samson when I was little (although he was a Samoyed), and he was a sweet, adorable little guy.

Also, if you like Samson, then of course name your German Shepherd Samson. The only person who needs to like your dog's name is you (and perhaps the dog, of course). But, I personally find Samson to be an equally adorable and strong name (and just as a side-note, Samson was a male character in the Bible who was known for having extraordinary strength, so I find this name very fitting for a German Shepherd).

Enjoy your new puppy - dogs make wonderful companions.

Reply:Yeah its a tough guy name, but I have found the best way to name a dog is to pick out several that you like then call the dog by each name and see how he responds to each. Often times they will respond more to some than others as if they already have a name. I was originally going to name my boxer Duke but then someone said the name Jake and he got all excited so thats what we named him.

If the old German letters are meant I would suggest the use of "Fraktur" instead of "Suetterlin"

Fraktur was used for printed items (books etc) while S眉tterlin (also known as Kurrent) was only used for handwriting.

German usually takes names in foreign languages as they are anyway, unless they are originally written in another alphabet.

"Dann" is from "Tanne" (spruce) and "Hardt" is an old word for mountain or big hill (Berg).
Reply:If your last name is already German, then you don't need to change it, it already is. You could try and find a German-type looking font. The alphabet is the same in German as English, but they use umlauts and other accents on some of their letters to denote pronunciation.

You may want to explore your family tree to see if there are any other variations of spellings.

Reply:That is a very unusual surame. I checked out Ancestry.com and found two possibilities. One of course is German like we all suspect, but I found a gentleman in the 1910 Middlesex, New Jersey census named Jacob Dreiter who lists his birthplace as Hungary.

The only way to be sure is to tell your friend to research his line starting with himself and working his way person by person, generation by generation. This is the only way to be sure of where his line comes from and he will learn so much more information that is relevent to himself in the process. My maiden name is a name that people told me for years was "French", yet it wasn't until I started researching that I learned that my line was DUTCH and that my surname was around in the Netherlands before 1811, when the civil registry was set up and people were ordered to take surnames. When I run into a name that rare, my instinct suggests that Dreiter may not be the "original" form of the name. One of 'my' names, Dolphay, came from Dauphinais. So, how a name sounds can be extremely misleading.

Your friends best bet is to get into some basic research, and track back on his direct lineage, starting with his father, grandfather, so forth. He would have to keep an open mind as to alternate spellings. At the point where he finds the ancestor not born in the US (assuming that is where you are writing from), he needs to focus on the specifics of that person, and learning exactly where he came from. His death certificate, maybe citizenship papers, census, or hopefully some family records (letters from relatives).. all these can be the key.

There are some good tutorials at www.cyndislist.com. Once he can confirm origin, he can also sub to mailing lists via rootsweb.com that cover most countries in the world.

If he came over at the end of WWII, he may have changed his name to hide a Nazi past. You said he did change his name once, so maybe there is more to this story than you have been told. Ingredients:

3-1/2 tbsp unpeeled almonds

3-1/2 tbsp hazelnuts

1-1/4 cup flour

1/4 cup + 1 tbsp sugar

a pinch of salt

1/2 cup + 6 tbsp butter, cold and cut into small pieces

2 egg yolks

5 packets vanilla sugar

1/2 cup powdered sugar

Cooking:

Pour boiling water over the almonds, remove the skins and finely chop. Finely chop the hazelnuts. Sift the flour onto a large wooden board. Make a well in the flour and add the almonds, hazelnuts, sugar, salt, butter and egg yolks. Knead dough until it is smooth and pliable, but do not over knead. Wrap the dough in aluminum foil and let rest for 2 hours in the refrigerator.

Preheat the oven to 375掳 F (200掳C). Divide the dough and form into several pencil-thick rolls. Cut the rolls into 2 inch lengths and bend into crescent shapes. Place on cookie sheets and bake on middle rack until golden brown, about 10 minutes.

Stir the vanilla sugar and powdered sugar together in a shallow bowl. Carefully dip the still warm crescent cookies in the sugar.

Tip: to store the cookies so they won't break, stack them lengthwise between wax paper in a cookie tin.

There's no problem whatsoever, believe me. I was in your situation for several years until I became a US citizen last year.

My passport -from my country of origin- had my maiden name in it and my green card had my married name. Nobody ever said anything and I traveled outside of the US many times.

One thing is VERY important: Your airplane ticket must be issued in the name that is in your passport!!.. that is, your maiden name.

That's for airline purposes only.

As for immigration in the US, they have enough information about you on their systems, they know exactly who you are so all they care for is when you left the country the last time. To do that, they will ask you and then they'll check the name on your passport on the system!!.

There's nothing to worry about.. I promise.

If you are in the US, you can get a new Euro Card (passport) at the German consulate, they can also explain about traveling with your old passport.
Reply:I think when you come back in the US they really only check your green card, so I don't think it would be a problem. Did you hypenate your name? For example, Jones-Smith, where your passport just says "Jones"? Then I really don't think it'll be a problem. Check with immigration here in the US to make sure.

Then when you are in the dog park and you are ready to call your dog to go you can yell out "Stella!" a la Street Car Named Desire. I work at a doggy daycare and some of the most popular names there are Lucy, Bella, Lola, Talula, Ellie, Ella and Bailey. They are pretty common names though and I don't like them. There is also choc female lab there named Sabrina. Food for thought.

When I was working in Germany, there were a couple of weeks (in September, I think) when we could get this fizzy wine drink that was from the first opening of the wine kegs as they were aging. It was sweet and very fizzy, with kind of a yeasty taste. Can someone please tell me what that is called? I was thinking it was something like rote-weisse, but I can't find anything online about it. I think wine is processed differently in the US so that product doesn't even exist here.

It is literally called "Neuwein". I did a study abroad in Germany several times, and this was one of the most anticipated times amongst the people I knew in the area. If I remember correctly, the wine had not had time to properly alcoholize (I know it's not a word, but you know what I mean), so it only had 2-4% alcohol content. It was sweeter than normal wine, and slightly carbonated. It is a lot faster to produce, since one does not need to leave the wine in the casks, but is only done at the certain time of year to allow for the best taste. "Rot-weisse" would literally just translate into "Red-white".

Reply:Yes, you should use her breeder's kennel name (again, assuming you purchased her from a reputable breeder). After the kennel name (let's say the kennel name is "Regal" then it could be "Regal Giovanna Princess" or Regal Princess Giovanna - something like that. However, if the kennel name doesn't fit, try to work in the registered name of her mother or father. I believe the AKC has an 25 letter limit to the length of a name.

Reply:German Giant Beardies aren't neccessarily from German areas. I believe that its just the person who discovered them that named them that. And the difference is that the GG Beardies have a bigger girth and are longer then other breeds of beardies.

it likely depends upon when it was changed exactly. my grandparents (germans themselves) talked about many people of german descent "americanizing" their names, particularly during the world wars, so as to not seem unpatriotic. remember when we got mad at france recently about them not letting us use their airspace, so all of a sudden "french fries" became "liberty fries?" well, back then, "sauerkraut" became "liberty cabbage" right quick.

however, the inability to enunciate might have played a big part as well. many cajuns in southern mississippi and louisiana (my other grandparents) actually had much more french sounding names than i do, but cajun is a "lazy" version of french, so names became more "mumbled" and "garbled" in the process.

Reply:I've been an Earnhardt fan since Dale Sr.began his career and never heard that. I'm not saying it's not true. I'm saying I didn't know that. Reply:I wasn't aware that their ancestors did that. I know that my uncle's grandfather shortened his name when he emigrated to the United States a hundred years ago in order to better fit in with the more English sounding names. Maybe that's why they did it.
Reply:during the deppresion many of the poeple who registered the immigrants into america got lazy on the spelling or misheard the name all together. it happened to many last names
Reply:The only groups worse than the Nazis were the Edzis. They dropped letters from their names when they fled Berlin at the end of the war. They try to blend in but they are conspicuously present everywhere.
