How popular is the name Lorelei in German-speaking countries?

The name Lorelei seems to be gaining a little more popularity in the U.S. lately, especially with the success of the "Gilmore Girls." Is this a popular name in Germany, Austria or other German-speaking countries? I know it has negative associations with Sirens, so I'm wondering how those from the country it originated from, perceive this name. Is it looked on negatively or not? Also, what is the most popular spelling - Loralei or Lorelei?

How popular is the name Lorelei in German-speaking countries?
The story of Lorelei as a myth is very popular in German-speaking countries.

Nevertheless, I haven麓t ever met a real person with this name, neither in Germany nor in Austria. Lorelei isn麓t popular as a name. Nobody is called "Snow White" or "Rumpelstilskin" either!
Reply:On Gilmore Girls it is Lorelai Gilmore, but I do not know about the German popularity.
Reply:I lived in the North, the southwest and the center of Germany, and never met anyone with that name.
Reply:I haven't heard it in south Germany.
