Is Kahn an Ashkenazi name or a German name?

Kahn definitely is a German name, there even is the noun Kahn, "ein Kahn" is a little (wooden) boat.

So as many family names derive from nouns or professions, some of XX Kahn s ancestors could have been ferrymen or they were simply known for owning one of these boats.

Is Kahn an Ashkenazi name or a German name?
It could be Indian (India) but spelt "Khan".
Reply:That name is quite common in Germany (e.g. Oliver Kahn - German soccer player) its not considered to be a typical Israeli name. Heres a list of typical names with direct translations:

According to that it would be closest to Aramaic origin (e.g.

Kahane [=Cohen], Raban [=rabbi], ...)

but "Kahn" would be German.
Reply:Jewish
Reply:Khan comes from the steppes of middle Europe
