What is the German origin of the name Shuman?

I am trying to trace my ancestory back to 16th century Germany

What is the German origin of the name Shuman?
They are right, its Schumann, the cobbler
Reply:If the name really stems from Germany, the spelling has been changed, as German does not use the S H combination. German's equivalent of the English sh is S C H. Also, a name would not end MAN. It would have a double N on the end. Many German names in the USA had the spellings altered to look less German during World War I, and more during WW2. So the name you are trying to pin down could have been Schumann, a perfectly legit German name.
Reply:as explained above, the German writung would be "Schuhmann" (or, as in the surname of the composer Robert Schumann, spelled without the "h") in any case, it originally refers to a shoemaker or cobbler.
