How do you pronounce the name Jurgen in German?

It's supposed to be spelled with two dots over the 'u' I think, but my computer won't do that. Anyway, what is the proper pronunciation?

How do you pronounce the name Jurgen in German?
The two dots are called Umlauts. They are one of the more difficult aspects of pronunciation in German. First, the easy part of your problem. You can insert an u-Umlaut or 眉 on a pc by holding down alt and pressing 129. In terms of pronunciation, a good way to approach it is to imagine an "e" behind any vowel with an Umlaut, so 眉 = ue and a = ae. So say J眉rgen as "Juergen." Phonetically, think about it as somwhere between"Yewrgen" and"Yewrken." Finally, don't even try and pronounce the Umlauts in H盲agen Daz or in Mot枚rhead. They'll just hurt your mouth!

Here's a full list for the codes of German letter with Umlauts:

Alt 132 = 盲

Alt 142 = 脛

Alt 148 = 枚

Alt 153 = 脰

Alt 129 = 眉

Alt 154 = 脺

Alt 225 = 脽
Reply:The two dots which in German can appear above the vowels a, o and u are called umlauts. Often these vowels are written with a following e. See the link below for a guide for pronunciation and get an Apple-mac.
Reply:It's hard to explain. I would say it like "Yoo-er-gen" except with the "Yoo-er" part run together. Like I said, it's hard to explain.

You can get close enough with "Yer-gen" though.

The keyboard shortcut for that is alt 0252. J眉rgen.
Reply:Yer - Ken

Say it all as one - YerKen
