How popular is the name Lorelei in German-Speaking Countries?

The name Lorelei seems to be gaining a little more popularity in the U.S. lately, especially with the success of the "Gilmore Girls." Is this a popular name in Germany, Austria or other German-speaking countries? I know it has negative associations with Sirens, so I'm wondering how those from the country it originated from, perceive this name. Is it looked on negatively or not? Also, what is the most popular spelling - Loralei or Lorelei?

The correct spelling is "Loreley". I am German and we do not use this name at all. It is just a name of a legend fromt he 19th century. I guess it would be similar like e. g. Lancelot. It is a name but you would not name your child Lancelot. This is how it is in Germany. It is possible, but I have never ever met anyone with that name.
Reply:If I have a girl I am naming her Lorelei. I really love that name. Report Abuse

Reply:On Gilmore Girls it is Lorelai Gilmore, but I do not know about the German popularity.
Reply:its actually spelled lorelai
Reply:Its not a real name used at all. I am Austrian and I have never encountered anyone with that name. The name comes frmo a German Romantic poem (based on a legend), but its not a name used at all. I assume the TV show name was meant to show that Lorelei's parents were familiar with te poem from which it comes (very famous in German, less so in English).
Reply:VERY
Reply:My cousin recently named her baby Lorelai, spelled like that. She apparently looked up the origin and found it to be some ancient prostitute that the pirates had relations with when they came ashore. My cousin is a little weird.
