What was the name of the two German Atomic scientists in World war 2 and how close did they come?

I know for sure Germany was very close to a atomic bomb but they never had the chance (thank god) to finish or use it.

But how close were they?

they split the atom first (for testing).

One of the German scientists was Heisenberg. Don't recall the other one(s).

True that Nazi Germany was out front for a time in nuclear fission research, but they went down the toilet because they had all the wrong ideas about what method should be used to mediate the chain reaction.
