I want to know if my grandfather was German. Could anyone help me?
Thank you for any help you can give.
Is the family name "Sprouse" a German Name?
I found this information for you on ancestry.com:
Sprouse Name Meaning and History
English or Scottish: unexplained. Posslbly a variant of Sprouls.
Sprouls: Derivative of Scottish Sproul, found mainly in northern Ireland.
Sproul: Scottish: unexplained. The derivative ending in -s may be patronymic, in which case this is from an otherwise unrecorded medieval personal name.
By the way, just because his surname doesn't appear to have been German, that doesn't mean he had zero German heritage. His Mother could have been German, for example. Genealogy research will help you find the answer.

Reply:The Sprouse surname is a comparatively rare name, and appears to be characteristic in origin. Research indicates that it can be associated with the English and Dutch, meaning, "one who spoke in a slow, drawling voice". The Sprouse name may have been spelled differently years ago. It is possible to find several different spellings. Language changes, carelessness and a high degree of illiteracy compounded the the number of ways a name might be spelled. Often the town clerk spelled the name the way it sounded to him. Some people Americanized their names when they came to this country so they would not be thought of as foreigners.
Reply:Hi, I am German and have never heard of a surname even like that. I tend to think that the other contributors might point you in the right direction.
Reply:It sounds more italian to me...
but maybe you can ask your grandfather or parents and they can tell you what heritage he was...
